Ask any movie enthusiast why he or she likes to watch movies in a theater and you will get an answer that you can “feel” the movie in a theater, whereas at home the experience is not even close. However, advances in technology have now made it possible to bring the experience of watching a movie in theater into your homes. A home theater system attempts to recreate this feel to give a theater-like movie watching experience right in your home. To put together a home theater system on your own, you will need a large screen television (minimum 27 inches), minimum five speakers and a audio –video receiver. The audio-video receiver is necessary equipment that splits the sound and sends it to speakers to create a surround sound system. The quality of your home theater system depends on your budget. The more you spend on it, the better the quality. You also have the freedom to spend on any one aspect of the system that you want. It could be either picture or sound quality.

A drawback of such traditional home theaters is that they create a lot of wire clutter. Typically, the audio-video receiver is connected to all the speakers through wires. The DVD player is also connected to the audio video receiver, which in turn is connected to the TV set through wires. A wireless home theater system tries to reduce the wire clutter by using wireless transmission to transmit signals. But the current technology only supports the wireless connection with audio speakers of the theater system. Since speakers are the home theater modules which require the longest wire connection, use of wireless transmission between the speakers and the audio-video receiver does reduce the clutter. Nevertheless, a complete wireless transmission between all the modules of a home theater system is currently not possible.

A case in point is Sony DAV-FX100W Wireless Home Theater System. This system connects the receiver and the rear speakers through a wireless link. The wireless link is provided through Infra-red technology, where the audio-video receiver sends the audio signal using the Infra-red transmitter and rear speaker receives it using the Infra-red receiver. However, both the rear speakers are connected with each other through a wire. Moreover, one of the speakers is required to be connected to a power socket since the rear speakers have in-built power amplifiers. The use of wired connection between rear speakers and the power amplifier does enhance the listening experience but does not remove the much desired wire clutter.
