Wireless laptop computers have been a part of our lives for the last good 5-6 years at least. In the early 2000′s they seemed like a toy of the rich or at least thought to be unreliable. Fast forward 5 years, everyone is getting a laptop with centrino platform. Centrino was the cumulative name of an Intel pentium M, the 855m chipset and a wireless network adapter. Intel has put some serious amounts of effort and money into the marketing of this platform and as a result centrino became a synonym for a laptop with wireless connectivity, which was a wrong assumption even then, as notebooks equipped with via and amd processors were easily accessible as well as products of Apple had it.
As of 2010, I can’t think of any manufacturer that is selling notebooks without wireless connectivity at least at the 802.11g standard. It is as much a default as color screen or integrated sound card, all of which were hard to imagine 15 years ago, even in a best buy laptop of that time.
These notebooks are able to connect to a network without any wiring needed, in other words, if there is an antenna called wi-fi access point is connected to the home or office network, a wireless notebook can connect to it as far as 150 feet away from it and transmit data, including browsing internet through this connection. It uses the frequency available to public radio transmitter units, 2.4ghz. There are regulations as to what the transmitting power can be and other safety standards, but basically anyone can build something that receives or transmits on 2.4ghz.
Strange though, that microwave ovens are heating water molecules in drinks or food with a 2.4 GHz microwave transmitter, so theoretically if there was a fault in the radio insulation in a microwave oven it would block all the wifi connection around it, just by putting strong interference on the frequency.

Wireless is certainly the way forward. Honestly if a laptop doesn’t have it, it’s not worth the money these days.
